[오픽 OPIC] 05. 여행 traveling

 

Q5-1. You indicated in the survey that you take vacations domestically. How is traveling different now compared to the past? Do you think traveling is easier or more difficult now than before? 
설문 조사에서 국내 여행을 한다고 하셨는데, 여행이 과거와 어떻게 달라졌나요? 지금 여행이 예전보다 더 쉬운가요 아니면 더 어려운가요?

I used to like traveling abroad, but now I enjoy traveling within the country. When COVID-19 stopped overseas travel, I started to enjoy domestic travel. Over the past 2-3 years, I have visited many famous places in Korea and learned how many beautiful places there are in our country. Also, traveling is much easier now than before. My parents said they used to travel with paper maps, but now it is very convenient because we can check our location in real-time with map apps on our phones.

Q5-2. Tell me about some issues concerning traveling. How do people handle those issue or problems?

여행에 관한 몇 가지 문제에 대해 이야기해 주세요. 사람들은 그런 문제를 어떻게 해결하나요?

 

First, there is the problem that prices are very high during peak seasons. So, it’s a good idea to book accommodations and transportation several months in advance or avoid peak seasons altogether. I usually prefer to travel when there are fewer people.
Second, there can be communication issues because of different languages. Nowadays, Google Translate works very well, so it’s okay. Or, you can learn and practice the language before traveling abroad. When I traveled to South America, I learned Spanish for a week in Bolivia. In South America, people don't speak much English, so learning Spanish made traveling much easier.
Lastly, there are problems with flight delays and cancellations. So, you can book flights with long layovers or get travel insurance. Another way is to schedule your itinerary with enough time after the flight arrival. Low-cost airlines especially have frequent delays and cancellations, so you need to be careful.
